Trump: If GOP Takes My Nomination, Supporters Won't Vote

Donald Trump says a lot of his supporters are first-time voters who will feel disenfranchised if they think the Republican presidential nomination has been stolen from him.

And if that happens, he told ABC's "This Week"  on Sunday, they won't vote in November.

"We do have some people that have never voted before," Trump said. "I don't know what's going to happen. You'll have a lot of very unhappy people. I think for the Republicans to disenfranchise all those people. If that happens, they're not voting. And the Republicans lose."

Trump earlier predicted riots if he gets to the convention with the largest delegate count, but is denied the nomination in a contested convention.
He said Sunday he would urge his followers not to riot if he loses the nomination fair and square. 

"You know, look, these people are fervent," he said. "They want to see positive things happen for our country. I would certainly say that. I don't want to see riots. I don't want to see problems.

Trump said talk by some Republicans of running a third-party candidate if he does win the nomination will only turn the presidency over to the Democrats. And that will result in four or five "super liberal" justices on the Supreme Court.

"Our country will never, ever will be same," he said.

Trump said he wasn't questioning Mitt Romney's religion in a recent statement asking Utah voters if the 2012 nominee who has come out against him was really a Mormon.

"I said it in a joking way," Trump said, adding that "The Mormons are very smart people. I don't think Mitt Romney is a smart person. I never have thought he was a smart person."

A California businessman is trying to expose the influence of money in politics by getting an initiative on the November ballot that would require state legislators to wear the logos of their top donors -- NASCAR-style.

The Name All Sponsors California Accountability Reform initiative (NASCAR for short) is being led by businessman John Cox, also a former Republican congressional and White House candidate who says “big money in politics has gone too far.”

“Candidates on both sides raise enormous amounts of money, then become beholden to those who give it to them,” Cox told FoxNews.com on Wednesday.

Cox has until April 26 to get 365,880 valid signatures to qualify to get on the ballot and has vowed to spend $1 million of his own cash.

He’s also hiring paid signature-gathers and has organized rallies at city halls, courthouses and other sites throughout the state to which he brings cardboard cutouts of the 120 state legislators with corporate logos plastered across their clothes.

“Unions and corporations have too much power in our state,” Cox says. "The ‘California is not for sale’ initiative will bring a level of transparency never before seen in politics.”

The eyebrow-raising story that appeared earlier this week in the National Enquirer, citing claims that Sen. Ted Cruz had engaged in five extramarital affairs, drew a sharp response from the Republican presidential contender. Sharp as it was, however, it was strikingly weak in terms of denial, and strong in terms of attack. And that combination is a telltale sign of deception that leads us to conclude that this is a matter that warrants further investigation.

The statement that Cruz released on his Facebook page on Fridayimmediately drew our attention:

“I want to be crystal clear: these attacks are garbage. For Donald J. Trump to enlist his friends at the National Enquirer and his political henchmen to do his bidding shows you that there is no low Donald won’t go. These smears are completely false, they’re offensive to Heidi and me, they’re offensive to our daughters, and they’re offensive to everyone Donald continues to personally attack. Donald Trump’s consistently disgraceful behavior is beneath the office we are seeking and we are not going to follow.”

Subsequently speaking about the matter, Cruz echoed that sentiment, with even more intensity (you can watch below). He said:

“The National Enquirer published a story. It is a story that quoted one source on the record: Roger Stone, Donald Trump’s chief political advisor. Let me be clear, this National Enquirer story is garbage. It is complete and utter lies. It is a tabloid smear, and it is a smear that has come from Donald Trump and his henchmen. It is attacking my family, and what is striking is Donald’s henchman, Roger Stone, had for months been foreshadowing that this attack was coming. It’s not surprising that Donald Trump’s tweet occurs the day before the attack comes out. And I would note that Mr. Stone is a man who has 50 years of dirty tricks behind him. He’s a man for whom a term was coined for copulating with a rodent. Well let me be clear: Donald Trump may be a rat, but I have no desire to copulate with him. And this garbage does not belong in politics. The National Enquirer has endorsed Donald Trump, has said he must be President. And so Donald, when he’s losing, when he’s scared, when Republicans are uniting against him, decides to peddle sleaze and slime. You know, Donald is fond of giving people nicknames. With this pattern, he should not be surprised to see people calling him, ‘Sleazy Donald.’”

We should note that these two statements constitute the only material that we currently have at our disposal to analyze, which is far from ideal. Obviously, the more material available for analysis, the greater our confidence in our findings. With that said, however, we were struck by the volume of deceptive behavior that we identified in these statements.

Behaviorally, when the facts are the ally of an individual, he or she almost always tends to focus on the facts of the matter at hand. In this case, if the key fact was that he had not had these affairs, Cruz would almost certainly have been much more strongly focused on the denial. That is, he very likely would have made a point of explicitly stating something along the lines of, “I did not have these affairs.”

Yet at no point in either statement did Cruz say that. He implied it by saying the allegations are false, and that they’re lies, but behaviorally, such statements are not equivalent to saying he never had the affairs. Even if we were to overlook that fact and consider his statements to be a denial, there is an overwhelmingly higher proportion of attack behavior compared to the effort expended at denial. This type of lopsided attack-to-denial ratio is very consistent with what we have historically seen with deceptive people when allegations are levied against them.

Given the lack of additional information upon which to conduct a more comprehensive behavioral analysis, this is nothing more than our initial opinion and assessment, and we will continue to follow this matter very closely. At the same time, we cannot help but conclude at this point that it’s not looking good for Sen. Cruz.

Keep the Promise I, the group backing Cruz, unveiled a suite of new attack ads and videos that hit Rubio on his voting record, “corporate welfare” and other issues.

As first reported by Politico, the ads will be targeted in Florida, and potentially beyond. 

Meanwhile, the pro-Rubio super PAC Conservative Solutions is out withits own ad in Florida touting the senator’s Florida story.

“Send America Florida’s best,” the ad says, promoting Rubio’s “national security strength” and saying he has a “vision to lead a new generation of conservatives.”

The Cruz allies' anti-Rubio blitz, though, poses yet another headache for the Florida senator, who has vowed to win his home state – and by most accounts needs to in order to survive past March 15 – but is trailing badly in the polls to front-runner Donald Trump.

Trump and Cruz both have tried to nudge Rubio out of the race. But Rubio insists he can make up the polling gap in Florida and notch a big win next week – when all the delegates in the state will go to the winning candidate.

“It’s crunch time now,” Rubio told voters Sunday in Idaho, which votes Tuesday. “I want to win.”

Rubio has won the Minnesota caucuses and, on Sunday, the Puerto Rico GOP primary, a tally that pales in comparison to the number of states and delegates won by Trump and Cruz. While Rubio is trailing Trump in Florida in most polls, Cruz is polling far behind in third place, according to the RealClearPolitics average.

Cruz’s aligned super PAC hopes the new ads can close that gap.

"We had so much fun winning Sen. Cruz's home state by 17 points, we thought why not repeat that in Sen. Rubio's home state?” Kellyanne Conway, heads Keep the Promise I, told Politico.

It’s unclear whether Cruz could make up that much ground in the state – but the ads threaten to hold down Rubio’s numbers just as he’s trying to catch up to Trump.

One of the ads calls Rubio “absent on national defense,” citing his voting record.

Another blasts him for seeking support for “big sugar” in Washington, and calls him “the king of corporate welfare.” 

Rubio is keeping most of his firepower focused on Trump. According to the Miami Herald, Rubio’s aligned super PAC also is spending big on TV ads largely attacking Trump. According to the Herald, the pro-Rubio super PAC is spending at least $6 million on TV ads as the candidate focuses on Florida. 

Trump, meanwhile, is fighting hard to keep his lead in Florida and aims to knock out Rubio with a win next week.

“I would like to face Ted,” Trump told Fox News on Sunday, suggesting Rubio should step aside. “I would prefer it. It cleans it up. Either way, it will be interesting. Florida is going to be, Michigan is going to be interesting coming up.”

Rubio is focusing his energy and resources in Florida in the days ahead. He’s holding a rally in Tampa on Monday, followed by another in Sanford, Fla.

Super PAC pitches GOP donors on plan to stop Trump

Washington (CNN)Katie Packer, the Republican operative leading the anti-Donald Trump super PAC, 

Pitched her strategy to stop the Republican front-runner on a call with more than 50 GOP donors and power brokers Tuesday, including those with ties to the campaigns of Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and Chris Christie.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman, who was Chris Christie's national finance co-chair, and Brian Baker, a Republican operative connected to the Ricketts family, both spoke on the call, sources who were on the call told CNN.

It came on Super Tuesday, as Trump prepared to build on his lead -- and Republican loyalists increasingly fretted the prospect that Trump will run away with the nomination.

Packer, a veteran of Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign who launched Our Principles PAC, told CNN that "it concerns me" that Super Tuesday's results might not make her task any easier by knocking any Republicans out of the field.

But, she added, "if the worst-case scenario is we have to take it all the way to the convention, that's fine by me."

Still, it's not clear that establishment Republicans have settled on a single strategy to defeat Trump -- a reality Packer acknowledged.

"The question is, do people feel like that's best executed by giving to a campaign that they're invested in or another candidate's super PAC or our effort?" Packer said. "We're not particularly greedy about it coming to our effort, although we have had a lot of enthusiasm for our effort."

Packer argued that Trump has not faced a sustained negative advertising campaign. She pointed out that so far, of the $215 million spent on the air in the GOP race, only $9 million has been funneled into attack ads against Trump -- less than the $10 million Romney's campaign spent in a single week in a single state, Florida, to undercut Newt Gingrich in 2012.

"The reality is that there has been no sustained campaign against this guy until last Thursday," she said.

The new push comes after the group aired ads against Trump in Iowa, but couldn't raise money to continue after Trump's second-place finish there.

Packer's super PAC also ramped up its efforts this week by hiring ex-Jeb Bush campaign aide Tim Miller as its communications director.

The group is already on the air nationally with an ad that launched Tuesday blasting "Trump University." It's airing on CNN and Fox News, as well as more broadly in Florida, Illinois and Michigan -- three key states that vote later this month.

The attacks on Trump could sound like the 2012 hits on Romney's work at Bain Capital.

Previewing her line of attack against Trump, Packer said: "This guy isn't a conservative. He probably isn't even a Republican. He is a con man who is incredibly vulnerable in the general election once Democrats get their hands on him."

New Hamshire Debate -CNN Fires Back At Ted Cruz - "A Flat Out Lie !"

Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN)Sen. Ted Cruz knowingly misstated CNN's reporting during Saturday's Republican primary debate, despite the fact that CNN's reporting was correct all along.

Cruz blamed CNN for a message his campaign sent to supporters the night of the Iowa caucuses suggesting Carson was going to suspend his campaign.

"My political team saw CNN's report breaking news and they forwarded that news to our volunteers, it was being covered on live television," Cruz said during the debate.

Cruz also claimed CNN had inaccurately reported that Carson was suspending his campaign "from 6:30 p.m. to 9:15," and "didn't correct that story until 9:15 that night."

That is false. CNN never reported that Carson was suspending his campaign and never issued a correction, because there was no need to do so.

In a statement out Saturday night, CNN responded, "What Senator Cruz said tonight in the debate is categorically false. CNN never corrected its reporting because CNN never had anything to correct. The Cruz campaign's actions the night of the Iowa caucuses had nothing to do with CNN's reporting. The fact that Senator Cruz continues to knowingly mislead the voters about this is astonishing."

The controversy stems from a CNN scoop that was broadcast last Monday night, minutes before the Iowa caucuses began. Reporter Chris Moody received information from the Carson campaign that he would be taking a break from the campaign trail after Iowa.

Moody, and the other CNN reporters who followed up on the report, said Carson would continue campaigning after taking a break at home in Florida. His next stop, they said, would be Washington, D.C., for the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday.

During CNN's live coverage, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash called the move "very unusual," but said nothing about Carson dropping out of the race.

Nevertheless, the Cruz campaign sent a message to supporters in Iowa suggesting that Carson might be suspending his campaign.

"The press is reporting that Dr. Ben Carson is taking time off from the campaign trail after Iowa and making a big announcement next week," the Cruz campaign email read. "Please inform and Carson caucus goers of this news and urge them to caucus for Cruz."
